We are working with intu to help deliver its £180 million extension to intu Watford that will provide an enhanced range of leisure attractions, including new restaurants and a nine-screen IMAX cinema, as well as broader economic benefits to Watford as it becomes a top 20 retail and leisure destination alongside Bristol and Edinburgh.

In 2013, we sat on a steering group with the Department for Transport and helped prepare guidance for new stopping up procedures under Section 247 of the Planning Act. We were then well placed to take forward a complex stopping up application for a number of walkways and areas of adopted highway that were to be closed and built upon as part of the intu Watford redevelopment. As well as co-ordinating the application, we negotiated with objectors and presented evidence to a public inquiry into the Orders required for both stopping up and the compulsory acquisition of properties.

Being able to offer a range of co-ordinated services was important on this project and managing both the planning and stopping up applications brought benefits to our client, particularly as it proved necessary for Lichfields to present evidence to a public inquiry into both highways stopping up and compulsory purchase. The scheme will significantly boost Watford’s leisure offer and evening time economy.
