Homes on our high streets

12 Dec 2017
Last night saw the launch at the House of Lords of a new research report undertaken by Lichfields for the Federation of Master Builders. Working with Child Graddon Lewis architects, Homes on our High Streets explores the potential to create additional homes above and around high street shops. This builds on previous literature, expands on the key topics of design, planning policy and economic drivers and considers potential design responses in six case study towns. The report culminates in five policy proposals to support this type of development in towns nationally.

The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said:

Homes on our High Streets isn’t just a fascinating report, it’s also very timely contribution to the debate. It puts forward some very interesting ideas and proposals; and we’ll be looking at it very closely to see how it can help us to fix this country’s broken housing market.

Ciaran Gunne-Jones, Senior Director at Lichfields, said:

We are very pleased that the Federation of Master Builders asked Lichfields to help lead this important research, which shows a range of solutions are possible at a time when there is a national imperative to increase housing supply and also support the economic vitality of town centres.
