Lichfields prepared a Townscape and Visual Appraisal (TVA) report, alongside other specialist inputs, to accompany a planning application for a residential-led redevelopment of a vacant brownfield site - comprising several buildings of between 8 and 13 storeys - in a prominent riverside location close to the North Woolwich Ferry Terminal.
Lichfields undertook robust fieldwork and a desk study exercise to inform an understanding of the townscape character of the site and local context, as well as identifying the key views to be assessed within the appraisal. Lichfields’ study of the baseline and emerging conditions, and review in VU City, facilitated a robust case for tall buildings on the site to be made as part of the appraisal. The townscape assessment confirmed that new landscaping and well-designed buildings would enhance the area adjacent to the ferry terminus and have beneficial effects on surrounding areas. The potential for cumulative effects from developments on both sides of the River Thames was carefully considered.
The Townscape and Visual Appraisal demonstrates how the scheme will integrate in views along the River Thames to create a coherent riverscape that reinforces the legibility of North Greenwich and create a more attractive arrival point.
