Science Central

Newcastle-upon-Tyne
1NG on behalf of University of Newcastle, Newcastle City Council and One North East

We secured outline planning permission for the flagship Science Central development which lies on a prominent 10 hectare regeneration site in Newcastle. The development is creating a new urban quarter which will be an exemplar in sustainability.  It will attract leading edge scientific organisations to a new mixed community encompassing a variety of research and development, educational, business, residential and leisure uses.
We provided strategic advice on the masterplan, prepared the Environmental Statement, co-ordinated the technical assessments and community consultation. We also undertook an Economic Appraisal of three development options for the site, taking account of principles in the HM Treasury Green Book. The appraisal assessed the monetary and non-monetary costs and benefits of each option enabling a Preferred Option to be selected. The appraisal was used to underpin a Regional Growth Fund application.
We are currently involved in the preparation of planning applications for two state-of-the-art University buildings.

I can without hesitation recommend Lichfields for strategic planning and masterplanning commissions. Previously, as Director of Programme Management for 1NG, we used Lichfields to produce the Science Central Masterplan, a priority economic development driver within both the Newcastle Gateshead LDF and the Economic Masterplan of the City. The work was always delivered to our agreed programme and to the contracted budget.
