Solutions to an age old problem

Our ageing population is growing and this has wide ranging policy and practical implications. Action is needed to ensure that the associated housing needs are met.

However, our research shows that only around 10% of Local Plans in England, Wales and Scotland have a specific policy to address older people’s housing needs and even fewer have specific land allocations for this purpose.

The House of Commons has called for a national strategy to bring together and improve policy on housing for older people. Our research provides recommendations to inform the national strategy focussing on how the planning system can help to facilitate the delivery of housing for older people.
