Lichfields helps secure infrastructure funding for Milton Keynes expansion

12 Mar 2020
Government has announced £94.6-million of funding to support the delivery of the Milton Keynes East (MKE) development, an urban extension including 5,000 homes and 100 hectares of employment. Lichfields helped Milton Keynes Council submit the bid to Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) and the funding will deliver initial infrastructure works, including a new bridge over the M1, to kickstart the implementation of the scheme.
The funding announcement within the Spring Budget 2020 follows the allocation of the MKE site, on land immediately east of Junction 14 of the M1, within Plan:MK the new Local Plan adopted in March 2019.
Working on behalf of Berkeley Group, Lichfields had promoted the 440 hectare area for logistics employment, housing and a range of supporting infrastructure improvements through successive Local Plan processes, presenting evidence and appearing at the Examination in Public to support the full allocation of the site in Plan:MK. The funding announcement is just the latest milestone in bringing forward this exciting opportunity.
This success is the culmination of nine years’ work on this site. The allocation marks a strategic move to expand MK eastwards, beyond the M1, and MKE is now set to provide significant housing and economic growth, fully supported by critical infrastructure, to help meet the ambitions of Milton Keynes, and deliver a high quality and sustainable development at the heart of the CaMkOx corridor.
