Tribute to Malcolm Hockaday

02 Jun 2023
It is with great sadness that Lichfields hears of the passing of Malcolm Hockaday, a former senior director and esteemed member of the business. Malcolm's remarkable career spanned over four decades, and he leaves an indelible mark on the planning industry.
Dr Malcolm Hockaday, as he was known professionally, obtained a PhD in town planning in 1973. He embarked on a distinguished career working in both the public and private sectors, including as Chief Planning Officer at Neath Borough Council. In 1999, he joined Lichfields from Value Retail to set up the company's Cardiff office.
During his 20-year tenure at Lichfields, Malcolm served as a senior director, head of office and chairman of the company; and obtained planning permission for many very important developments. Notable projects he spearheaded include Clapham One, The Deptford Project, Morden Wharf and The Old Vinyl Factory. Malcolm's career took an exciting turn when he became chairman of Lichfields in 2011. Later he relocated to the London office, where he dedicated his time to client work.
James Fennell, Chief Executive of Lichfields, expressed his condolences, stating, "Malcolm's intelligence, creativity, advisory style and affable personality made him an excellent and much-valued planning consultant. His commercial acumen and dedication to the job endeared him to numerous developer clients, most notably Landsec U+I who he joined from us, for his last career-posting. He made a very big contribution to our business for which we will always be very grateful."
Lichfields extends its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at Landsec U+I.
