Evaluating benefits of private wire energy developments

Analysis of the economic, social and environmental benefits of renewable energy developments that provide a secure energy supply to offtaker businesses.
Security of energy supply and price certainty has become a key consideration for businesses making decisions to invest and expand in the UK. Achieving a ‘private wire’ supply of renewable energy is part of the solution to this uncertainty. High energy-consuming businesses are increasingly looking at opportunities to develop renewable energy installations such as ground-mounted solar and wind turbines.

The need to site them in proximity to the energy consuming operations limits where such energy installations can be viably located, often requiring land in rural locations, including open countryside and Green Belt.

Over recent years, Lichfields has successfully applied its own evaluation tool to estimate and illustrate the economic, social and environmental benefits of proposed grid-connected renewable energy developments.

We have now re-cast and extended the methodology so that it is bespoke for the assessment of private wire energy schemes and the clear additional benefits to offtakers. It can be used to convey clear and compelling explanations to communities affected by the development and to help weigh in the balance those benefits when determining planning applications.

Wired articulates the significant long-term benefits that could be unlocked by the renewables development.
