Project
New Inn Yard, Shoreditch
4-6 New Inn Broadway is a unique office and exhibition space development in Shoreditch. The site is a scheduled ancient monument, with the in-situ remains of ‘The Theatre’ built by James Burbage in 1576, which staged William Shakespeare’s plays before being salvaged and moved to build the Globe Theatre on London’s south bank. The new exhibition space will stage Shakespearean events, display Elizabethan artefacts and offer a view into the in-situ remains of ‘The Theatre’ below. Above is office space and the proposals include a greatly enhanced public realm with a William Shakespeare statue.
Lichfields has helped steer this fascinating development project through the planning system from project inception to delivery. Following planning appraisal and strategy advice, we promoted the scheme through pre-application and application stages, liaising with LB Hackney, Historic England, and other stakeholders, helping ‘The Box Office’ to secure full planning permission for the development. We subsequently led the discharge of the planning conditions and non-material design amendments, as well as advised on the exhibition management plan. Construction of the project was completed in 2020 but opening is dependent upon the end of ‘lockdown’ restrictions.
