Project
Woodley School and College SEND
Kirklees Council
Improving the outcomes for children and young people with special educational and additional needs in Kirklees sits at the heart of the Council’s Inclusive Ambitions which seek to address key inequality issues in Kirklees. Investing in and working with children and young people and their families at the earliest opportunity, will support the Council to help them in achieving their best possible life outcomes. Achieving these outcomes, will help all children and young people who live and are educated in Kirklees to have the best start in life; make good educational progress, have high aspirations and good life opportunities. This includes children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) including Autism.
The new school building will accommodate 180 places for children and young people with Autism. It will be constructed on the site of the former Almondbury Community School and sports centre and will cater to pupils aged 5 to 16, with a post-16 provision. Woodley School and College will relocate from its current site, resulting in an increase in the number of planned places.
As a council, one of our ongoing major priorities is making sure children and young people have the best start in life. We have a continuing commitment to providing excellent education for those with special educational needs, and this development is a crucial part of that. This change of use for the site will bring great benefits to all our students and their families. What we have here is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create something quite exceptional for our students, which will be bringing these benefits well into the future"
