We were appointed by Clearbell Capital in 2014 to advise on a major mixed use redevelopment of an existing shopping centre in Durham (The Gates). The site lies in a very prominent location in Durham City Centre, within a Conservation Area and adjacent to Durham Cathedral and Castle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Clearbell’s scheme proposed the creation of a new riverside promenade and incorporated a new shopping and restaurant offer, a six screen multiplex cinema, and student accommodation in the setting of the World Heritage Site. Working closely with Clearbell and their project team, the local planning authority, Historic England and a range of stakeholders, we were able to address a range of complex heritage, planning and design issues, and this helped us to secure planning permission within 16 weeks.
The team has worked closely with Durham County Council and we are delighted consent has been received. Once complete, it will provide a great boost to the local economy, transform the centre and provide a sense of destination and place within the City.
